LORD ALLARNATH AND THE TAMIL PRIEST SRI KETAN & HIS SON MADHUSUDAN

LORD ALLARNATH AND THE TAMIL PRIEST SRI KETAN & HIS SON MADHUSUDAN
LORD ALLARNATH

As Explained in the website of Alarnath Temple :

Sri Vigraha’s Love of Devotees: There is a Legend relating to the eruption marks on the right hand, on the face, on the chest of the Lord. In the long past a poor Tamil Kama Brahmin priest named Sri Ketan was serving the Lord on bagging alms. He had a 12 yr old son Madhasudan by name. On one occasion, the Tamil priest remained absent for a long time as he was out to a distance place, The boy was serving and doing pooja in the absence of the father. One day the boy prepared ‘Khiri’ in the Kitchen and took the container and placed it before the Lord. He offered it as “Naivedya’ to the Lord and closed the door of the temple. There after, boy played with other children for some time. Then he came and opened the temple door and found that ‘Khiri’ had remained in the container as he had placed it. The boy felt that the Lord had not accepted his offer of Khiri and so began to cry in grief. He prayed to the Lord.

Oh Lord! Please eat this Khiri, Father has been to a foreign land I don’t know the process of Pooja and offerings, So I am praying at your lotus feet.

The boy’s this emotional entreaty moved the heart of the Lord. To please the boy, the Lord accepted and ate the ‘Khiri’. The container fell empty. The boy returned home in joy. On seeing the empty Container the mother asked the boy- where is Prasad ? The boy replied “The Lord ate up the “Khiri’. How will then be any Prasad ? A doubt cropped up in the mother’s mind. She thought like this.

‘Even though her husband does the offering after this sixteen procedures of Pooja, Prasad reaches home in the container, How is it that the Lord ate up and emptied the pot without any utterance of Mantra’ ?

On the second day, the mother watched the offering made by her son through a small hole on the door. To her utter astonishment, she found that the Lord descended from the Singhashan and began eating the Khiri.

After some days when the priest Sriketan returned home his wife told him about this matter. The mind of the Brahmin was filled with suspicion, So he also watched through the hole the offering of ‘Khiri’ made by his son to the Lord and was amazed to see the Lord part taking ‘Khiri’. To prove the truth, innosence and simplicity of the boy the Lord started eating the ‘Khiri’ even through it was too hot. While the Lord was in the state of eating the hot ‘Khiri’ the Brahmin opened the door and as a result the hot khiri spilled over the body of the Lord which left these eruption marks for all times. The Lord bore the brunt owing to his love for his devotee.

Priest Sriketan implored to the Lord if you eat away all the ‘Prasads’ how will we live? The Lord replied “I ate up the Naivedya’ as the boy offered it with love and I appear before you also because of the boy’s love and reverence. The Lord asked the priest to beg him any boon that he liked. But the priest instead of listening to the Lord went on repeating his question. As a consequence the Lord got annoyed and cursed him to be extirpated along with his clan. He took Madhusudan, his dear devotee to Baikuntha or heaven.

After this event, due to the absence of priest the Lord remained unworshiped for several years. When Gajapati Maharaja Sri Purusottam Dev was returning home after his Victorious Kanchi campaign, he visited the Lord and got to know about plight. He made the arrangement for his pooja by sending two Brahmin families from Bashista gotra and one family from Bhara dwaja gotra. These three Brahmin families carried on the pooja of the Lord according to the scriptures. The kind made all arrangements for the maintenance of the servitors. The Progenitors of these three families are carrying on the Pooja system with pump and ceremony to this day.

HE gives Response to Call with Devotion

Undaunted devotion and trust is the key to reach at HIM. Even if somebody do not go to temples, do not put efforts to offer flowers and prasadam (Naivedya) to God but has full selfless devotion in mind, then he/she can make the impossible to possible. According to Shakespeare: “Impossible is a word found in fool’s dictionary.” God immediately responds to those who surrender to HIM with selfless devotion. Within twinkling of an eye, the desires of those devotees are fulfilled by God.

Such an incident was happened in the remote village ‘Palanka’ adjacent to ‘Brahmagiri’ where the temple of Lord Allarnath exists. The incident has been heard from one of the sevayat (devotee) of Lord. The true story was heard by one of the joint secretary of the revenue department of govt. of Odisha, Sri Sudhasu Sekhar Bhuyan.

One Muslim family was residing in ‘Palanka’ village adjacent to ‘Brahmagiri’. Dildar Hussein was the jaminder in that village. He had lot of property and uncountable grains of paddy and rice which were stored in a house called ‘Khamar’ (grain go down). In the event of famine or any calamity as needed by the villagers, the grains were distributed to them by the jaminder.

The old grain go down of the jaminder in course of time converted to the Tahsil office of the government.
In the year 1991-’93, the khamar or the grain go down was the office of the Regional Revenue Department of state govt. By the grace of Lord Allarnath the secured khamar still exists. In the first part of 20th century, there occurred a dangerous cyclone. The whole area was devastated. Lot of big trees got uprooted and fell lie on the ground. The age old houses were collapsed. The terrible sound of the cyclonic storm mingled with the cries of the living being including animals and birds of that village were really heart touching. Villagers of the ‘Palanka’ village were very much effected and afraid of the situation called for by nature. Dildar Hussein, the jamindar, was in deep grief stricken thought – what will happen to the khamar (go down)? If the grain go down is completely destroyed, then after the cyclone what the villagers will be fed ? Being disappointed, he reached at the Allarnath temple, situated in front of the khamar. Being a Muslim, he had no rights to enter the Hindu temple. Standing in front of the Lord Allarnath temple, with folded hands, he prayed to Lord Allarnath saying: “ Oh, my beloved Lord Allarnath, kindly bless to protect the khamar as well as the grains stored inside. If protected, then the villagers will be fed and they will be saved from starvation.”

Surprisingly, just after 15 minutes of his prayer to Lord Allarnath, at once, the cyclonic storm subsided miraculously. There was no harm to the khamar or the grains stored by Dildar Hussein.

Dildar never went to the temple nor offered any puja in his past days but he had undaunted selfless devotion to the Lord. Although a Muslim by religion, he understood the Almighty God is one. He never prayed for his self anything to the God but when the danger was faced, he prayed selflessly with folded hands to the Lord Allarnath for the sake of the villagers, for the welfare of the mankind. His selfless prayer melted the heart of the Lord.

Due to the grace of Lord Allarnath, the khamar got untouched by the devastating cyclone and at present the same khamar building stands as the revenue office there. In 1991 – ’93, it was a thatched house but presently it stands as a pucca building.

It is the grace of Lord Allarnath believed as Lord Vishnu, the Lord Jagannath.

LORD JAGANNATH IN THE FORM OF LORD RAGHUNATH AND LORD JADUNATH

Lord Jagannath in the Form of Lord Raghunath and Lord Jadunath
KRISHNA VESA

RAGHUNATHA VESA

Lord Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe has fulfilled the desires of devotees who in different
ages had throng Puri to personally behold him in the form and shape of their own admired and adorned presiding deities. Take for instance, Ganapati Bhatta of Maharastra whose own
presiding adorned deity was Lord Ganesh during his visit to Puri desired to see Lord
Jagannath in the form of Lord Ganesh. Lord Jagannath had fulfilled the devotee's desire and gave him Darshana in the Snana Mandap on the day of Snana Purnima in the attire of Lord
Ganesh.

It is Adi Jagadguru Sankaracharya at the first Darsan of Lord Jagannath at Puri had recited
songs glorifying Lord Jagannath, which is best known and popular titled 'Shree Shree
Jagannath Satkam' written and recited in Sanskrit language.

It begins :
'Kadachit Kalindtata Bipin - Sangeeti Kabaro
Mudaviri-Nari-Badana Kamal Swada-Madhupah
Rama-Shambhu-Brahma Surapat Ganesha
Jagannath Wami Nayan Patha Gami Bhbatume(1)

Meaning : "Once you appeared in the woods on the banks of Kalindi dancing to the tune of the sweet concert. Seeking nectar from the lotus faces of cowherd women. Your feet adored by Laxmi, Shiva, Indra and Ganesh. O Lord, The Master of the Universe, Thou appear in my vision.

It was Jaban poet Salabega an ardent devotee of Lord Krushna had seen Krishna in Lord Jagannath and has written and recited many Bhajans and Janans on him. Sri Jagannath is
adorned in different attires basing upon Lilas-of Lord Krishna. These Veshas are Kaliya Dalan Vesha performed in Bhadra Krushna Ekadasi, Pralmasura Badha Vesha in Bhadra Krushna Dwadasi, Krushna Balaram Vesha in Bhadra Krushna Trayodasi, Radha Damodar Vesha from the month of Asunya Sukla Dasami to Kartika Sukla Dasami, Chacheri Vesha from Falgun Sukla Nabami to the end of Falguna Purnima. Lord Jagannath is a mysterious God. The Krushna devotees opined that Lord Jagannath is Lord Krishna. In the month of August-September (Bhadrab) Krushna Janmastami is celebrated in Srimandir and in the month of October-November (Kartika) Kartika Brata and Rasa Purnima are celebrated in Srimandir. There is a legend behind Sri Krishna's last rites that when Lord Krishna was shoot by Jarasabar's arrow and when he left his body for cremation all the limbs of Lord Krishna were burnt and the Navi portion could not be burnt. There are sunyabani (unseen sky words) that you throw it in the ocean. It is believed that the unburnt Navi of Lord Krishna has been kept inside the Daru Bigraha and it is replaced in the new Daru when Nabakalebara of Lord Jagannath is performed. Lord Balaram was Lord Krishna's eldest brother and Goddess Subhadra is his sister and even in this iron age (Kaliyuga) the three deities are worshiped in the sacred sanctum which is known as gem-thrown or Ratna Singhasan. So Jadunath of dwapar age is none else than Lord Jagannath. Lord Raghunath is also Lord Jagannath.

There is a legend behind it. When Santha Tulasi Das of 16th century after performing his holly journey to Prayag, Mathura and Kanchi had arrived Puri. Santha Tulasi Das had his pious desire that he will behold Lord Jagannath as Lord Raghunath. But when he entered the temple, he only saw that Lord Raghunath or Ram, Laxman and Sita are not seated in the holly sanctum and Lord Ram and Lord Laxmi have no arrows in their shoulders. He could not see in his own eye the Raghunath Vesha of Lord Jagannath and opined that Lord Jagannath is not Lord Raghunath. He then promised to leave Puri and not to take food and water until and unless he beholds his own adorned presiding deity Lord Raghunath. He left Puri and spent at Tulasichaura of Malatipatapur village adjacent to Puri. In the meanwhile, a boy with some Mahaprasad requested Santha Tulasi Das to eat something and drink water fetched by him. Tulasi denied. When he enquired about such attitude Santha Tulasi Das replied that unless and until he beholds in his own eye Lord Raghunath, he will not take anything or drink water. The boy then asked, did not not behold Lord Raghunath in Lord Jagannath ? He said that Jagannath has got no foot, no ear and no hand and how can he worship and take granted as my beloved Lord Raghunath. Then the boy hinted that he is an author of Ram Charita Manas and he is known as Rambola and in his Ram Charit Manas he has written about the God that

"Bina pada, Chalu, Bina Kana Suna, Bina Kara Karama Karjana."

Meaning that God or Param Brahma walks without foot, ears and performs Karma without the hand. Then Santha Tulasi Das was astonished that how can this boy is of a tender age could know about these spiritual things. The jeeva performs Karma and Lord Jagannath who is ParamBrahma does not perform any Karma as he is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. He can work without foot, can hear without ear can perform Karma without hand andthat is the greatness of Lord Jagannath. Then Tulasi Das with the boy went from Malatipatpur to Puri temple and the boy soon vanished in the temple and Santha Tulasi Das could see in the sacred sanctum the Veshas of Lord Raghunath, Goddess Sita and Lord Laxman and at last admitted that he has seen his own Raghunath in Lord Jagannath. So it is said that Lord Raghunath and Jadunath are also Lord Jagannath. So from time immemorial devotees of Ram Cult and Krushna cult visit Lord Jagannath Here lies the greatness of Lord Jagannath.

LORD JAGANNATH AND KRIPASINDHU DAS

Lord Jagannath and Kripasindhu Das

In Western Orissa, lived a Brahmin
Kripasindhu by name.
generous he was towards poor
lived with name and fame.

Adverse hours approached him
lost all wealth, he had
one after another, lost children
a wretched life, he lead.

To Sri Jagannath, he surrendered all
did not care for want
engrossed himself all the while
looked for divine grant.

His wife told "if beggar comes
nothing is there at home
better commit suicide both
then to beg and roam.

Hear my beloved "Consoled he
Lord Jagannath is there
please have patience, faith on Him
never brood and despair

From neighbour darling! borrow some flour
make ten pieces of bread
with five, I shall proceed to Puri
with rest you manage, he said.

Sri Jagannath in guise of Vaishnav
came to them for food
all the breads, they offered Him
served Him well, they could.

Both the spouse, starved that night
Vaishnav slept there sound
next morning, when got up both
amazed to see around.

House is packed with house hold goods
Guest was vanished from them
Brahmin pondered, told his wife
Jagannath's celestial fame.

Both the spouse, praised aloud
The grace of Lord in glee
spent devoted, rest of life
before they used to flee.

Honestly served distressed souls
As guests, they honoured all
Food and clothing, offered to poor
attended needy's call.

SANTHA SHREEDHAR SWAMI MAHARAJ

                 SANTHA   SHREEDHAR SWAMI MAHARAJ

SOME EVENTS IN THE LIFE OF SHREEDHAR SWAMI MAHARAJ

Shree Swami Sridhar Maharaj was born on 7-12-1908 in Lad Chincholly, near Gulbarga in Karnataka. Every moment of his life was dedicated in the service of the divine.

Before attaining MahaSamadhi on 19-4-1973 at the Varadpur Ashram, Sagar, Karnataka where he established the “Dharma Dwaja”, he inspired the masses and reinforced the principles of “Sanatan Dharma”.

In 1948, Sreedhar Swami came to Rishikesh after eight months of “Tapas” at Uttarkashi. Swami Sivananda, founder of Divine Life Society, Rishikesh immediately recognized him by his divine radiance and welcomed him and offered Pranams to the great saint. Swami Sivanada told his disciples “ I walked a lot, but I have never seen “Tejasvi” & “Tapasvi” of the order of Sreedhar Swami Maharaj. “Akhand Brahmanishta” and “Purna Gyani”such is the nature of Sreedhar Swami. ”

Karpatriji Maharaj in Kashi has said “ In present age, Samarth Ramdas has himself come in the form of Sreedhar Swami. Dharma’s establishment and social transformation has all been made possible by Sreedhar Swami’s “Akand Tapas”.

Ma Anandmayi on meeting Swamiji declared “ We are all walking up the hill of “Parmarth”. Path is narrow and extremely difficult. Established on the top of the hill is seen Sadguru Sreedhar Swami Maharaj”.

Prabhavati Raje, the ardent disciple of Raman Maharshi after passing away of her Guru, came across Swamiji Receiving his blessings she said “Sreedhar Swami’s darshan has made me realize the presence of Maharshi”.

Shrengeri’s Shankaracharya Swami Abhinava Vidyateerthji once breaked his journey to Delhi at Hoshangabad when he came to know of Sridhar Swami’s stay there. He had the Darsan and offered the holy seat of Shrengeri Peeth to Swamiji. Swamiji smiled and showered his blessings.

Once, Satya Sai Baba along with his disciples went to Varadpur Ashram to see Swamiji . On reaching the Ashram, he asked his disciples to maintain perfect silence and declared “Brahma” himself was performing “Tapas” there. Swamiji came out of his cottage and blessed all.

Swami Chinmayananda, founder of the Chinmaya Mission once came across Swami Nityanada, a disciple of Sridhar Swami at “Saandepany” Ashram, Mumbai. On meeting him he offered pranams to Swamiji and said “Your Sadguru is this worlds greatest treasure. There is no limit to his Divine powers and Tejas. I have realized this myself.”

Swamiji spent his complete life aimed at transformation of totality. His Akhand sadhana during last eight years was restricted at Varadpur Ashram, Sagar which he established as the power centre for all aspirants. Swamiji’s sankalpa of transformation stands firm.
